The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery, Ian Morgan Cron & Suzanne Stabile. 2016. 230 pages.****

The Road Back to You is a great primer for any person beginning their journey with the Enneagram. It will give you a great overall introduction. The initial type descriptions are very pragmatic and detailed in a way that will connect with Enneagram newbies.

Mirror for the Soul, Alice Fryling. 2017. 168 pages. ****

Another great overview of the Enneagram, this time from an explicitly Christian perspective. Fryling’s beautifully co-mingled humility + personal strength come through, and I found myself trusting her as the kind of person to teach me well about self-awareness and transformation.

The Wisdom of the Enneagram, Don Richard Riso & Russ Hudson. 1999. 383 pages. ****

This is an excellent resource for people still typing themselves, but only if used wisely! If you are just starting out, I do NOT recommend reading it cover-to-cover. It goes into 200/300 levels of Enneagram instruction, a little too deep for most beginners. But, its Riso-Hudson Type Attitude Sorters, located at the very beginning of each type description are excellent for getting early-typers headed in the right direction. Read through and score yourself for the top 2-3 types your tests have given you. The results will narrow your field even more, hopefully down to 1-2. The Riso-Hudson TAS will show if one of your top tested types is only probably the type of one of your parents or a wing, etc. Once you’re down to 1-2 types, feel free to read the deeper descriptions in this book of just those 1-2 types.

Self to Lose, Self to Find, Marilyn Vancil. 2016. 203 pages. ***

Written as Biblical Approach to the 9 Enneagram types, Vancil’s perspective is especially helpful for Christ-followers who want to learn about the Enneagram from that viewpoint. Vancil also gives some simple practices for growth that are very intuitive and helpful.
