The Enneagram is a phenomenal tool for any spiritual or mental health professionals who help people with self/God-awareness. It specializes in human motivation, and isn’t that what so much of our spiritual, mental, and physical health comes down to? That said, the hands-down most helpful thing you can do first is to dive into it for yourself. If your ultimate goal is to use it to help others, it might seem to be a waste to spend time and energy focusing on yourself first. But – I promise! – taking it to your own heart and mind, becoming first a specialist in your type, plumbing the depths of your own interior life, will reap far more long-term benefits for your clients / patients / parishioners than a general overview of all nine types. If you insist on being only a generalist of the nine types, you will gain the heady knowledge, but still lack the depth and personal experience that have the potential for lasting transformation. For both your clients and you.

Enneagram Companions by Suzanne Zuercher. 1993, 179 pages ****
Enneagram Companions is an excellent 400 level resource for any person who is confident of their type and has any job in the field of direct-ministering-to-others (spiritual direction, mental health counseling, missionary, parent, etc.). Zuercher explores how each triad receives and gives in a spiritual director-directee relationship. Her lucid and brilliant observations can be well applied to any of the beforementioned relationships.
